ABOUT THE BLITZ

ABOUT THE EVENT

In 2006, Ohio University Doctorate of Physical Therapy students began the Battle the Blitz event, an annual tournament between Athens and Ohio University community members and the Buckeye Blitz Wheelchair Rugby Team. This tournament was started as a way to raise funds to offset the high cost to compete, as well as to raise awareness for adaptive sport programs. Our 2022 event will continue as an in-person tournament!

ABOUT THE TEAM

The Ohio Buckeye Blitz are a co-ed, semi-professional wheelchair rugby team based in Columbus, Ohio. Quadriplegic Rugby is a full-contact sport where all players exhibit some level of dysfunction in all four limbs, often due to spinal cord injuries. To play the sport, teams must come up with enough funds for registrations, lodging, and competitive equipment. Chairs alone can cost up to $7,000, and when combined with other fees can cost the team more than $17,000 annually.
